The controls have a balance of both sim-style and arcade style handling. Particularly this one.Īs mentioned earlier, this is a simcade racer. Just the right amount of techno and mix it with lounge music. Nice little touch.Īnd did I mention the menu music? Those glorious menu music. Certain areas of the tracks, like street races, have ambient music playing over at certain locations. There’s some little touches too on the sound design. But it doesn’t as jarring as say, Gran Turismo 5’s sound design. Sound-wise, the cars themselves sounds seemingly authentic, with punchy vrooms and screeches. It helps that Codemasters have been featuring certain locales that are not yet standard in most other racers like the Sepang Circuit and the Yas Marina (this is one is getting popular, though).

But, if you actually have seen the game running on a strong PC (like me) then it will feel the 30 fps is a sad compromise, even the menus are not as smooth. The game runs at 30 fps, and can dip down once in a while when things get busy such as a massive pile-up. Sure, the interior (yes, that camera angle is back) doesn’t get much love, and so are the many crowds, but they are at least serviceable. The damage model, a Codemasters specialty, looks even better. The lighting and detail of the cars looks fantastic. GRID Autosport looks a lot like GRID 2, and that’s a compliment. What I can assure you for now that it is a bloody good game. Is it a good apology? Read on to find out. GRID Autosport is then released the next year after GRID 2 and attempted to rectify the biggest of faults that fans clamouring for. GRID 2 flopped commercially as well as critically. Loyal fans were angry, but Codies didn’t listen, as they are aiming what Dirt 2 did- making it more appealing to the mainstream. Even certain features, like the interior cockpit cam was gone. The interesting build a race team angle was gone. For GRID 2, released in 2013, Codies were changing a lot of what made the first GRID so appealing and scuff it away.

It was a long gap between Race Driver GRID and GRID 2. Again, the subtitle would be the main tarmac racing title.

TOCA Race Driver ditched the TOCA license and and was called Race Driver: GRID. The subtitle continues as the main brand of off-road and rally games of Codies, especially after the passing of the namesake, a great rally driver he was. Collin McRae Rally was called Collin McRae Rally: Dirt. They have always been respected by fans of racing for their ability to walk the tightrope of both without any huge compromises for both the hardcore and the casual racing gamer.Īs the 360/PS3 generation dawned, Codies launched their two racing franchises with a bit of rebranding. UK-based developers Codemasters have a reputation of leading the charge of racing games with a “simcade” handling. The points and views raised in the review however are not affected in any way.
